Text = Seminar and Public Events Autumn 2007 =
**PUBLIC SEMINAR: FAR WEST / CHINATOWN** Friday 26 October 2007 Arnolfini, Bristol, UK **SPEAKERS ARE: ZOE BUTT, ALISTAIR HUDSUN, SARAT MAHARAJ & ZHANG WEI** Zhang Wei’s curatorial residency FAR WEST / CHINATOWN, concludes with the seminar exploring questions around parallel perceptions and fantasies of the 'other', in terms of East and West, and how such projections of difference are absorbed into everyday 'local' culture. Curators, critics and artists unpack parallel perceptions of the 'other' in terms of East and West, exploring how such projections of difference, and also direct cultural links, are embodied in the 'local'. A platform for the discussion of ideas feeding into Arnolfini’s The Far West exhibition and the concluding event of Zhang Wei’s curatorial research residency hosted by Arnolfini in October, in partnership with Relational, as part of the Curatorial Network programme. The panel includes **Zoe Butt**, curator and director of international programs, [[http://www.longmarchspace.com/english/homepage.htm:Long March]], Beijing; **Alistair Hudson**, curator at [[http://www.grizedale.org:Grizedale]]; **Sarat Maharaj**, Professor of Art History and Art Theory at Goldsmiths’ College, University of London and co-curator of Documenta 11; and **Zhang Wei**, director of [[http://www.vitamincreativespace.com:Vitamin Arts Space]], an innovative platform for participatory and experimental projects in Guangzhou, China. Zhang Wei’s residency and the seminar contributes to the Arnolfini project The Far West, to be realised in the summer of 2008. The Far West is planned as large-scale exhibition, in partnership with the Beijing-based Long March Foundation, curated by Lu Jie (Long March Foundation, Beijing) and Tom Trevor (Arnolfini, Bristol). ‘Off-site’ projects will be curated with, and produced by, Zoe Shearman (RELATIONAL, Bristol). The Far West incorporates ‘off-site’ context-based artworks, participation projects, talks and symposia, and a related programme of performance, walks, film and literature.
Autumn 2007 events are organised and hosted by [[http://www.arnolfini.org.uk:Arnolfini]] and [[http://www.relational.org.uk:Relational]].
