Dear All
Sorry for not posting before - and I do now following the long list
of Valerie's "webography"
We've been working quite hard here as part of the Seminar on the
issue of "Curating the Other - the Curator as a Tourist",being held
in Dartington for the last weeks.
Participants chose subjects relating to this issue and researched the
structures, curators, sponsors and backgrounds of national and
international exhibitions, of supporting systems in different
peripheries, or on specific artistic manifestations - and political
choices around these issues.
As a matter of fact, the group focused on the Bennial phenomenon -
and specially on the structure of the Liverpool Biennia, since Paul
Domela will be one of our guests this weekend; Some issues in the
Chinese Art Boom were on the table , specially in England, and
researching diasporic curators and wondering about their compromises
with the a reality in which "freedom of speech" seems still to be
doubtful. We also focused on specific issues in South East Asia, the
Middle east and Africa.
At this stage, there are more question marks than assertive answers,
and we are in a stage of tying-up each and every issue for the public
session that will be held here on Friday at 15:00, where the
participants of the Seminar will be giving brief recounts of their
research.
I asked all the participants to circulate their referents and
bookmarks for further reference, and Valerie thought it's a good idea
to do this on the List - as I was urging the participants to start a
dialogue on this platform. Do you think it is a good idea ? If so, we
should at least introduce the list with a few lines about the subject
of the research and its dynamics. I will ask Valerie to send a few
lines on this, so we know to what issue the list applies.
In general, it has been a very compelling seminar, raising points not
only in contemporary curating, but also in the importance of
critically viewing and consuming art exhibitions.
I am sure the sessions on Friday and Saturday will lead to more
questions and discussions between us, the guests and the public.
Don't miss it !
