Dear List,

In the series of announcements here is one from Artists Space about its
Irving Sandler Artists File Online project.

--
Since its launch in 1974, Artists Space has maintained the Irving Sandler
Artists File, an image database and registry that currently includes work by
over 6,300 active artists both from the U.S. and abroad. Inaugurated and
developed as a slide registry, the Irving Sandler Artists File was
subsequently digitized and has been online since June 2002. A new interface
was launched in March 2006. Since the re-launch, an average of 200 new
artists joined as active members on a monthly basis; as of August 2007, the
size of the registry has doubled and the site received between 2 and 3
million hits monthly.

This new phase of the project development includes adding new features.
³Curatorial Tagging Feature² creates new ways for users to filter content,
new layers of meaning and context for the work in the file, and additional
avenues and possibilities of exposure for participating artists. Modelled on
similar features in groundbreaking web ventures like Flickr, a select group
of curators including and chosen by Artists Space¹s Curatorial College will
have the ability to tag artist portfolios. These tags will include concrete
as well as more esoteric ideas, themes, and concerns. All visitors to the
site will be able to access these tags, following threads and discovering
additional artists to those they can access using the navigation filters
that include medium, style, and location. Another new feature is a
³Curator's Public Lightbox² in conjunction with the current ³Featured
Lightbox². The same select group will be able to publish their lightboxes in
public and it will be introduced on the home page each time someone publish
the lightbox. As the feature develops, all those who register on the site as
curators will be able to create tags and publish the lightboxes, creating an
ever-expanding, yet navigable conversation.
