'Video installations by Mariele Neudecker open at Bristol's City Museum &
Art Gallery
Bristol's Museums, Galleries & Archives has commissioned two new videos from
Mariele Neudecker. From December 17 visitors will be able to see the
finished art works and experience another dimension to the interpretation of
the newly refurbished Egypt Gallery.
The Egypt gallery displays over 500 objects, some over 3,000 years old, in
four sections: Belief, Life, Death and Afterlife to tell the story of the
Ancient Egyptians.
Those Who Came Before Us, And Us Who Are To Follow is an interactive work.
Layering footage collected from a hot air balloon trip over the Land of the
Dead near Luxor with time-delayed live CCTV recordings of visitors in the
Life section of the gallery, Neudecker creates a dream-like experience.
You Are Always On My Mind is an intimately presented video showing a potter
throwing and inscribing a pot. Representing an Ancient Egyptian vessel, the
pot is reminiscent of an object that may have been put in a tomb to provide
for the Afterlife. The viewer must move closer to hear the secrets the pot
holds, which alludes to a modern myth in which it is posited that
archaeologists can decipher ancient inscriptions using contemporary
technology.
These pieces resonate with the Ancient Egyptian view of the afterlife, but
also with our own ideas of history and material culture - what messages are
being transmitted to us from the past? What messages do we knowingly or
unknowingly send to the future? Are the traces of history all around us?
Do not miss the chance to hear the artist talk about her work with Kate
Brindley, Director of Bristol's Museums, Galleries & Archives, on 31 January
2008. This event is free but booking is recommended, please contact
julia.carver at bristol.gov.uk to book a place.
Commissioned by Bristol's Museums, Galleries & Archives with support from
the Henry Moore Foundation, the MLA/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, RIFE Investment
Fund through the UK Film Council and South West Screen, Friends of Bristol
Art Gallery and Friends of Bristol Museums, Galleries & Archives.'
