REALISING Creative Cornwall
A conversation between cultural leaders, policy makers and artists
7th July, 11am 1pm, Coffee at 10.30
Trinity Chapel, Jack Lane, Newlyn

Cornwall has a rich and long established visual culture of international
renown. The opening of The Exchange - a brand new space in Penzance- and the
refurbishment of Newlyn Art Gallery, now in its 111th year, is a timely
moment to look afresh at the impact of contemporary visual arts and creative
participation on Cornwall at the beginning of the 21st century. You are
invited to join what promises to be a forward focused occasion - shaping an
ongoing conversation and the development of contemporary culture and
creativity in Cornwall.

Sir Nicholas Serota, Director Tate, Professor Alan Livingston, Principal of
University College Falmouth and Chair of Arts Council England, South West,
Mary McCarthy, Arts Manager, Dublin Docklands Development Authority,
previously Director of Programmes for European Capital of Culture Cork,
2005, will give short presentations, exploring (in line with the European
Funded Objective One, Convergence Programme) the contribution that the
contemporary visual arts make to skills development, the knowledge based
economy and a sense of place. Sheila Healey, Chief Executive, Cornwall
County Council and Mercedes Kemp, Artist and Writer will join them for the
ensuing discussion chaired by Professor Declan McGonagle, Chair of Art and
Design, University of Ulster.

The Exchange and Newlyn Art Gallery, the commissioning agency ProjectBase,
Tate St Ives and the development of workspaces for artists across the region
have the potential to play an important role in the economic, social and
cultural development of Cornwall, adding quality to the lives of residents
and visitors alike.

Organised by The Creative Unit of Cornwall County Council, ProjectBase, The
Exchange and Newlyn Art Gallery in partnership with VAGA as part of the
REALISE your right to art programme for long term change.

³REALISE is an important initiative within and beyond the contemporary art
network. It provides a most helpful national context for Cornwall¹s
developing understanding of the use of culture as a social and economic
driver at the heart of the Convergence Programme Š. and a dynamic focus for
debate at an important time.² Peter Boyden, Chair of Culture South West.

Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange, Penzance open to the public on the 7th
July

The architects MUMA (McInnes Usher McKnight Architects) are responsible for
both buildings re-furbishing the existing Newlyn space and adding a
spectacular glass pavilion on the seaward side of the gallery and converting
the ground floor of the old Telephone Exchange in Penzance to create a major
new gallery. Together, the new and enlarged venues provide the opportunity
to present work on a scale previously unavailable in the region.
