Iranian born artist Akram Rahmanzadeh explores human conditions and
social relationships. Her subject matter revolves around people, their
placement or misplacement. Inspired by spatial elements and motifs in
Persian miniature, Byzantine and Pre-renaissance paintings, her works
investigate the objective or descriptive space in visual narrative. The
architectural features employed in her work divide space, create layers
and compartments. The figures are placed onto the architectural motifs
and engaged in different activities.

The paintings become more playful when she adopts two different view
points, frontal and aerial, which shift in between the flatness of
surface to the depth of space. They engage the viewer as the
participant; random figures in the paintings suddenly appear alert and
look back at the viewer drawing her/his attention. The physical pace
outside the paintings becomes an extension of the work.

Featuring two major series of paintings entitled Hammam (Persian word
for public bath) and War, this exhibition moves from the intimacy of the
feminine space in "Hammam" - which examines the exclusivity of a female
space, its social significance and celebrates the idea of feminine by
breaking stereotypes - to the shocking images in "Circus" which is
inspired by the images of Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and depicts the
conflict viewed through the eyes of media, the de-humanization and the
destruction; the tragic overlapping with the comic.

Akram Rahmanzadeh came to England in February 1985. She studied Fine Art
at Norwich School of Art, Kent Institute of art and Design and finally
received her master degree from Chelsea School of Art and Design, London
in 1993. She moved to Somerset in January 2000 where she continues her
practice from a studio in Street. She has exhibited both in Europe and
the USA.
