The History of the World 1997-2004
Plymouth Stories
The exhibition presents Plymouth Arts Centre's
archive with selected programmes, images and publications
generated from key exhibitions. In its
early years there were exhibitions by Gwen John, Ivor Kenny and
Ted Williams, as well as famously offering
Beryl Cook her first exhibition. The '80s and '90s saw
a wealth of now internationally-acclaimed artists producing new
work such as Patrick Heron,
Jenny Holzer, Peter Blake, Paula Rego, Helen
Chadwick, Richard Deacon and Stuart Brisley.
Reciting the City by Mike Lawson-Smith. is a two-
screen video installation that sets the stage for a latent
dialogue between Plymouth's citizens, prompted by
film footage extracted from the South West Film and Television
Archive.
Jeremy Deller's wall drawing The History of the
World 1997-2004 is an intricate mind map that traces
the links between the Acid House scene of the late
'80s and the traditional brass band. A map of
connections that reveals a culture and its origins.
Through its citizens, oral histories of a location survive and
are told. We are interested in hearing from anyone who would
like to share a Plymouth Story from the past or present. If you
would like to take part in this project please contact Plymouth
Arts Centre and your story can form part of the exhibition and
be recorded for Freesound 106.6FM.
