Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I am forwarding an opportunity for a fully funded PhD in collaboration with
Spike Island and UWE. PhD Studentship: Learning beyond formal education:
peer learning within the networks of contemporary art in regional cities.
I would appreciate if you are able to pass this onto anyone who you may
consider relevant.
Best wishes,
Paula

PhD Studentship: Learning beyond formal education: peer learning within the
networks of contemporary art in regional cities.
Research, Enterprise and Outreach Office.
An PhD studentship is available from 1st October 2008 for a period of 3
years.
This studentship is funded by the AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award scheme.
Collaborative awards are intended to encourage and develop collaboration
between Higher Education Institution (HEI) departments and non-academic
organisations and businesses. Collaborative research studentships provide
opportunities for doctoral students to gain first hand experience of work
outside an academic environment.
The student will be based at Spike Island, Bristol. It is a collaborative
project between UWE and Spike Island, Bristol under the supervision of
Professor Paul Gough (UWE), Mandy Ure (UWE), Lucy Byatt (Spike Island) and
Marie-Anne McQuay (Spike Island).
The student will have access to facilities at Spike Island and at UWE
campuses as well as appropriate research training through Research, Business
and Innovation workshops. The annual stipend is £13,940 and all fees are
paid.
The project will assess the role that institutions have to play in enabling
peer learning for emerging visual arts practitioners beyond formal
education. The proposed programme of doctoral research will investigate the
objectives and methodologies behind the Spike Island Associates programme
(www.spikeislandassociates.org.uk) as its starting point, and examine other
examples nationally which aim to promote similar peer learning initiatives.
The project aims to examine and understand how regional cities can grow and
sustain a well-informed, self-motivated and confident arts community. It
will investigate how different models of knowledge exchange outside of
formal education function and how institutions can share good practice and
benefit from a sustainable regional network.
Spike Island is a national centre for the production and exhibition of
contemporary art, housing artists' studios and running an international
residency programme. It is also the base for UWE undergraduate Fine Arts
programmes.
