"Master Humphrey’s Clock"

Eindproject van het Curatorial Programme 07/08 van de Appel

Elk jaar selecteert de Appel arts centre jonge tentoonstellingsmakers van verschillende culturele achtergronden om een Curatorial Programme (CP) in Amsterdam te volgen. "Master Humphrey’s Clock" is het eindproject georganiseerd door het CP 07/08" in Leidsche Rijn, de VINEX locatie in Utrecht. De hoofdtentoonstelling vindt plaats in Het Gebouw, een tentoonstellingspaviljoen ontworpen door de conceptuele Nederlandse kunstenaar Stanley Brouwn en architect Bertus Mulder en gerealiseerd door BEYOND, de kunstopgave voor Leidsche Rijn. Een deel van de tentoonstelling is eveneens te zien in Het Schaduwkabinet, een projectruimte in de Appel.

"Master Humphrey’s Clock" is een tentoonstelling geïnspireerd door de Emmaüs tweedehandswinkel in het hart van de strak vormgegeven VINEX wijk Leidsche Rijn. Hier komen lokale bewoners en bezoekers om spullen af te geven en te ruilen. Zij zorgen voor de roulatie van allerlei objecten en de circulatie van daaraan gerelateerde verhalen.

De titel van het project, "Master Humphrey’s Clock" is ontleend aan een periodiek geschreven en gepubliceerd door de Engelse schrijver Charles Dickens (1840-41). Het werd in wekelijkse afleveringen geproduceerd en omvatte diverse manieren van verhalen vertellen en meerdere verhaalijnen (een daarvan verscheen later als de roman “The Old Curiosity Shop”). De deelnemers van het CP 07/08 vonden het verhaal op een boekenplank in de voorgenoemde tweederhands winkel in Leidsche Rijn.

Publicaties:

Naar aanleiding van de tentoonstelling verschijnen twee publicaties:

"F.R.'DAVID – The Book of Intentions" wordt op de opening gelanceerd. F.R. DAVID is een tweejaarlijks journal uitgegeven door de Appel, dat zich richt op de status en functie van tekst, taal en schrijven in de kunst. De vierde editie, "F.R.DAVID – The Book of Intentions", is 'gehijacked' door de curatoren van "Master Humphrey's Clock" en hiermee ook een ‘site’ voor het project. In acht hoofdstukken exploreert deze editie van F.R. David –de thematische interesses van de tentoonstelling, met geselecteerde werken van onder andere Ricardo Cuevas, Noa Giniger, Gabriel Kuri en Michael Stevenson.

De tweede publicatie, "Index" zal de tentoonstelling documenteren en bevat teksten van de curatoren (verschijnt in de zomer van 2008). Beide publicaties worden internationaal gedistribueerd door Idea Books en zullen te koop zijn bij de Appel arts centre en boekenwinkels wereldwijd. F.R DAVID – The Book of Intenties is tijdens de tentoonstelling ook te koop in Het Gebouw (Leidsche Rijn, Utrecht).

Een seminar over ‘opdrachtgeverschap’ – hoe komen plaatsgebonden hedendaagse kunstwerken tot stand, wat gaat daaraan vooraf en wat zijn de ‘gevolgen’? In samenwerking met curator Paul O’Neill (GB) en het “Situations"- Programme van de University of the West of England in Bristol.

Every year de Appel arts centre selects young curators from different cultural backgrounds to participate in a Curatorial Programme (CP) in Amsterdam. “Master Humphrey’s Clock” is the final project by de Appel’s CP 07/08* created for the new suburban location of Leidsche Rijn, Utrecht, the Netherlands. The main exhibition venue is Het Gebouw; a pavilion designed by Dutch conceptual artist Stanley Brouwn and architect Bertus Mulder (commissioned by BEYOND: the long-term art project for Leidsche Rijn). Part of the project will take place in The Shadow Cabinet, an exhibition space at de Appel.

"Master Humphrey’s Clock" is an exhibition inspired by the presence of a second-hand shop in the heart of a heavily designed, new suburban development in the Netherlands (Leidsche Rijn, Utrecht). In this shop residents and people visiting the area drop off their old belongings and attain new ones, participating in the circulation of objects and the stories they hold.

The project’s title is borrowed from Charles Dickens’ “Master Humphrey’s Clock” (1840-41), a periodical that presents a variety of stories through the narrative of one character: the elderly Master Humphrey, and his treasure of manuscripts. Part of this serial publication was later transformed into a novel called “The Old Curiosity Shop” (1841). The participants of the CP 07/08 found the story on a bookshelf in the second-hand shop in Leidsche Rijn.

*The participants of this year’s installment of the course, and curators of "Master Humphrey’s Clock", are Yulia Aksenova (RF), Jesse Birch (CA), Sarah Farrar (NZ), Inti Guerrero (CO) and Virginija Januskeviciute (LT).

Publications:

On the occasion of "Master Humphrey’s Clock", two publications will be released:

The first publication is "F.R. DAVID – The Book of Intentions", which will be launched on the opening. F.R. DAVID is a journal published bi-annually by de Appel that focuses on the 'status' of writing in contemporary art practice. The fourth issue, "F.R. DAVID, The Book of Intentions", is hijacked by the curators of "Master Humphrey's Clock" as one of the sites of the project. The Book of Intentions includes works by Ricardo Cuevas, Noa Giniger, Gabriel Kuri and Michael Stevenson.

The second publication, "Index", will register all the works of the project and will be published in summer 2008. Both publications will distributed internationally by Idea Books and will be available for sale at de Appel arts centre and other bookstores worldwide. During the time of the exhibition F.R. DAVID-The Book of Intentions will also be available for sale at Het Gebouw (Leidsche Rijn, Utrecht).
