As part of the Container programme at The Star and Dove contemporary
artspace we are pleased to present Saturday by Rhys Coren. The Bristol based
artist is a recent graduate from University West of England and was selected
for Bloomberg New Contemporaries in 2007. Current projects and exhibitions
include Rhys and Hannah Present, Broadmead Shopping Centre, Bristol and
OPENENDED, Rogue Project Space, Manchester. He co-initiated a platform for
his written work called Martin Hell and regularly produces small books and
zines through Jaguar Shoes, London.
The satirical nature of his practice plays upon some of his underlying
fascinations with common cultural references, which may relate to a
particular generation or genre, such as a certain fashion style in the
1980's or children's Saturday morning television. The work, a vehicle for
this fascination, gives voice to these particular memories, which Coren
draws on as a catalyst to tease out a shared connection between the
audience.
Through text, sculpture, painting, installation and video, Coren employs a
playful and naïve aesthetic in his particular use of colour and imagery.
However, there is seemingly an awkwardness contradicting the polished and
considered aspect of the work, through visible screws or untreated, sawn
wood. This tension reflects the need to consider the role that humour plays
within contemporary art practice, which is pertinent within his work.
For Coren's first solo show, he presents Saturday, the culmination of a body
of work that looks, simultaneously, at articulating the fun and joy and
naivety of Saturdays from the past, reminiscing and re-presenting idols,
logos and memories through painting and video, alongside an installation of
decisions and the cycles present in Saturdays of now.
