Opportunity to work with visiting artist Ricardo Ruiz from Brazil
in a two day workshop at Plymouth Arts Centre
Saturday 31 May and Sunday 1 June

MimoSa invites the people of Plymouth to work with them for two days to
create a portable recording device, which will be used to gather stories.
MimoSa are an artists¹ collective who use redundant technology to create
portable systems to document people¹s lives in Brazil. MimoSa¹s practice has
been influential on Brazilian governmental policy on technology and the
Internet, and the artists group are partly responsible for the development
of open software practice in Brazil.

Ricardo Ruiz, founder of MimoSa, is coming to Plymouth to run the workshop.
Ruiz is one of the catalysts for the introduction of open-source software in
Brazil, which has been an important step towards making technology more
accessible. Over the past six years, Ruiz has developed and implemented
three major programmes within Brazilian governmental policy, devising ways
in which free software could be implemented on the government¹s social
programmes. MimoSa is motivated by the idea that people start to think
critically about media when they start to produce their own. MimoSa has
worked in five Brazilian cities and is now taking its work further afield,
having visited Greece, Germany, Spain, Manchester and now Plymouth.
 
The workshop coincides with Plymouth Arts Centre¹s current exhibition of
contemporary Brazilian art, entitled Estrategia (translated as
³Strategies²). Estrategia runs until 22 June.
