Project: Entry Level
Organisation: The Brewhouse Theatre & Arts Centre
Role: Artist/Facilitator
Period of Engagement: 17.5 days between end of December 2008 and March 2009
(timescales of overseeing the construction may depend on planning consents)
Fee: £3,500
Approx. Materials Budget: £8000
Application deadline: 12 noon, Monday 8 December 2008
Interview: Week of 14 December
We strongly encourage applications from disabled people as they are
currently under-represented in our organisation.
In response to the redevelopment of public space around The Brewhouse, the
organisation is seeking to commission an artist/facilitator to work with
local developers and communities facing barriers to participation at the
venue to produce a piece of public art that explores issues around improved
access to the main entrance of The Brewhouse. This project follows on from
the On the Next Level initiative, facilitated by Art Shape, Gloucester,
which involved artists and arts organisations across the south west.
Stage one will see the artist/facilitator researching access in a creative
and interactive way, utilising a cross-section of communication tools to
feed their creative and visual investigations of space, culminating in an
exhibition that presents this research and the plans for effecting physical
change to the building's façade. Stage two will see the artist/facilitator
overseeing the delivery of the physical work, liaising with the local
developers to ensure that the public art engages holistically with the
development of the area.
This role would suit an accomplished public artist who is excited by the
creative possibilities of construction as a means of encouraging access and
enhancing cultural experience.
The following skills and experience are highly desirable:
* Strong artistic vision and engagement with a range of media.
* Solid research and development skills.
* A good knowledge of public art, construction and access through
design.
* Understanding of public space and the built environment.
* Experience of project managing, including budgets and knowledge of
planning regulations and procedures, risk assessments and health & safety
best practice.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* Experience of addressing issues of access, and working with people
facing barriers to participation.
* The ability to work creatively, imaginatively, flexibly and
appropriately depending on the needs of different individuals and situations
* The candidate will be expected to work to The Brewhouse Policy for
the Protection of Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults, and will
under go a full Criminal Records Bureau check upon appointment.
